This question is a pretty hot topic at the moment and we’re sorry to wimp out but the answer really is “it depends.”
Because your foot has to deal with different ground surfaces, angles and terrains, it has developed the ability to be flexible. It can move you over all sorts of ground and prevent you from falling (which is a good thing).
Sometimes this flexibility causes problems. However, it may mean the foot leans inwards (pronation) causing knee and hip problems, and potentially pain. In other people the foot leans outwards (supernation) and this brings a whole different set of problems.
Orthotics are defined on about.com as: ”orthopedic appliance or apparatus used to support, align, prevent, or correct deformities or to improve the function of movable parts of the body.”
Orthotics can help the bone structure of your foot to maintain the “ideal” structure of your foot. They allow the foot to maintain the position of best function by supporting your whole body as you walk. We have a number of shoes with a removable inner sole so that they can be replaced by an orthotic. Shoes like some of the Naots, Dansko, Think! and Legero are perfect for this (and before you panic – a lot of them look really great as well).
But….you knew there was a ‘but’ coming didn’t you …every single foot is different. Continued…
