What are Bunions?

They are one of the most common forefoot problems. A bunion is a obvious bump around the big toe joint. This bump is actually a bone protruding towards the inside of the foot. After time it is common to find the big toe resting under or over the second toe. Some symptoms of bunions include inflammation, swelling, and soreness on the side surface of the big toe. Bunions can have so much discomfort it leads to people walking improperly.

WHY?

Mostly women experience bunions. Some causes are:

  • Arthritis
  • Hereditary
  • Wearing wrong footwear size and style

Treatment and Prevention

In the early stages of a bunion, you can soak the feet in warm water can provide temporary relief. But the best way to avoid bunions is wearing the right size and style for your foot type. Orthotics or inserts can provide extra comfort, protection and support. There are also treatments like bunion shields, bunion night splints, and bunion bandages. These can slow the bunion formation and relieve pain.
