Why do my feet hurt when I first get up in the morning and what can I do about it?

Firstly, now would be a good time to mention that I am not in a position to offer medical advice. I am a writer and ex seeing eye dog volunteer  (repeat after me – she received an honourable discharge).

But Sally has been a podiatrist for many years and she knows more about healthy feet than I ever will. So read on, see if it seems relevant to you and if it does, feel free to come into the store and ask for some personal advice.iPhoto-3

Do your feet hurt when you get out of bed?

It really hurts. A lot.

We know.

Your feet feel fine when you are lying warm in bed but by the time you are in the bathroom, there is serious pain in your heel. As they say in dodgy German movies (are they German?) Ve have zum gut news and zum badt news

The bad news is that you probably have Plantar fasciitis – an inflammation of the tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes.

The good news is we can help.

The even better news is we can help without making you wear ugly shoes. In fact, we can help and put you in shoes that are as good looking as they are comfortable (a big claim we know but one we are happy to stand by).

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

We could fill this whole page with a detailed description of exactly what causes this condition. We could tell you it is most likely to occur if you are female, are overweight or if you have flat feet or a job where you spend a lot of time on your feet (we could even tell you that it used to be called policemen’s heel but that would be showing off.)

But we are guessing that what you really want to know about is how to stop the pain.

We could give you a long list of things that could help. You could try cortisone injections or night splints to help ease the pain. Some studies have even shown acupuncture can help, as can cold presses and certain exercises.

Or

You could buy good quality, well fitting, comfortable shoes.

Of course, there are other places to buy great shoes, but (and yes we are maybe a little biased) nowhere that you offers an onsite podiatrist and an awesome range of very cool shoes.

We scour the world for great and gorgeous shoes. We have an enormous range of chic and directional brands such as Naot, Birkenstock, Campers, Beautifeel, Earth, Rieker, Think!, Kumfs, Timberland and Converse.

Unlike other stores, we are also very happy to take the time to help you find the right shoe and the right fit.

Simple really.

Your feet want to work for you so get them the right equipment and let them.

Sally sold me my first pair of Birkenstock Tatamis ( with the rocker bottom ) about 15 years ago – I still love them and only wear them in the house. They are more comfortable than bare feet. I progressed to owning more than a dozen pairs of Birkenstocks ( mainly Footprints ). They revolutionised my life so no more bunion pain – no more red, throbbing bunions so bad that I would need to walk on the outer edges of my feet on my days off work. Back then, hardly anyone in Brisbane wore Birkenstocks as they were not yet a fashion item. Now, everyone wears them! I remember the shooting pain from my bunions right up to my knees while I was walking around New York on my honeymoon many years ago. This type of pain is non existent for me now and is far in my past. Sally changed my life with that first pair! By the way, I love the range of shoes you keep.
